Use helpful expressions to gain time to think - “Really” - “Uhmm” - “Uh-huh” - “Anyway” - “Tell me more” 2. Give positive remarks or comments - “Sounds good” - “I see what you mean” 3. Ask for repetition - “Can you please repeat what you said?” - “What did you say again?” - “What did you mean, when you say that…” 4. Check for understanding - “So, are you saying that…” - “So, what is your understanding of this?”

Discussion question 2 Do you agree that becoming a strong and effective communicator takes time and practice? Why or why not? It takes time and practice because effective communication is an acquired skill, and it does not happen overnight. Everyone experiences challenges when communicating, such as communication barriers and breakdowns. Over time, we practice strategies in order to avoid these problems to overcome it. With the practice and time we put into acquiring the confidence in communicating with other people, we achieve strong and effective communication. 

WEEK 4 - Discussion 1

Discussion question 1 How can communication breakdowns be avoided? There are strategies in order to prevent communication breakdowns and have an effective communication transaction. Keeping focused, speaking intelligbly, listening with your ears and eyes, minimizing distractions, being specific by using simple and concise words, and not jumping into conclusions are several strategies followed in order to prevent further breakdowns. There is also the 7Cs of Effective Communication made by Broom, Cutlip and Center. These are completeness, conciseness, consideration, concreteness, courtesy, clearness, and correctness. Ronnie Peterson also listed 5 ways to avoid communication barriers, which are having clarity of thought, learning to listen actively, maintaining proper tone and body language, building up confidence in asking for feedbacks and observations, and communicating face to face effectively.

Discussion question 2 Can you recall an experience in your life where you experienced communication breakdown? What happened and why did the breakdown occur? (answer in not less than 5 sentences). Back when I lived in the United States of America, I had experienced a lot of communication breakdowns, especially in school. During the first months, I was shy and lacked the confidence in talking to my classmates, so the breakdown of communication was caused by psychological barriers. I also experienced cultural barriers back then as I wasn't used to the American culture and it was different from our culture, such as calling someone "ate" or "kuya" to those who are older than you, and the different holidays we celebrate there versus here in the Philippines. I had also experienced some communication barriers as  I wasn't really able to understand my classmates when they use some slang words in our conversations sometimes.
