WEEK 1 - Discussion 3

Discussion question 3 Answer the question in exactly 5 sentences only. Recall an instance where you engaged in a conversation with a topic that you are not comfortable with? What is the topic and how did you manage it?      There was a time where I had a conversation with my mother about body-shaming this certain celebrity. She was ranting about how they can just use their money to lose weight and stay "fit", and yet they choose not to take surgeries and whatnot. As a person who was also body-shamed for years, it was extremely uncomfortable for me since it felt like I was also being attacked, and that our physical "flaws" are still not accepted by society despite having a stable lifestyle and mental health. I was scared to confront her since I know that she still won't side with me, yet I remembered that it is still important to educate her about it. At first, we were talking a lot, but then our conversation died down as I wasn't able to come up with a new topic and it became awkward. Despite my fear of being judged, I decided to become more confident and conquered that fear by talking to him again, and after that interaction, we became close friends.

WEEK 1 - Discussion 1

Discussion question 1 Answer the question in EXACTLY 5 sentences only. How do you usually start a conversation?      Starting a conversation usually depends on who, where, and why are we talking to that person. Thus, before engaging in a conversation, I always try to consider the environment and body language of the person I am going to talk to, so that I can avoid future communication breakdowns. I will also try to feel the atmosphere during the conversation, so that I can refrain from giving the wrong impression towards my peer. I always keep in mind that I should be cautious with my choice of words, as the person might not understand me during our conversion, such as using jargons and slang that they are not really aware of. These things will not only help me properly start a conversation, but also avoid miscommunications and insensitivity.

WEEK 8 - Discussion 3

Discussion 3 In your own words, differentiate LOCUTIONARY, ILLOCUTIONARY, PERLOCUTIONARY and give at least 1 example for each (not copied from the handout). Locutionary, Illocutionary, and Perlocutionary are the three types of speech act according to J.L Austin. These speech acts are statements used in order to deliver an intended language function, such as compliments, opinions, commands, etc. Locutionary is the act of making a meaningful utterance that is executed as a natural unit of speech. For a statement to be Locutionary, it must be sensible and have the same meaning to both the speaker and listener. An example of this is when someone says "Join our club!". It is locutionary because it creates an equal meaning between the speaker and the listener. Intrapersonal communication is when you become both the speaker and receiver as the communication occurs in your brain, it comes in your thoughts and feelings. On the other hand, Interpersonal communication takes place between two or more people, which can range from personal to formal conversations. For me personally, both types of communication are equally difficult and easy for me. However, if I were to really choose between the two, I would say that Intrapersonal is easier for me to practice because I can express myself and thought freely without having the fear of other people judging me. I also think that practicing to communicate with yourself first is crucial in engaging in interpersonal communication so that you know how to delive...
