GRADE 147/150     As we surpassed the 500,000 mark on the COVID-19 cases recently, it is evident that the pandemic is yet to be over. The feeling of uncertainty keeps creeping up on us, as the government fails to provide a long-term solution to stop the pandemic, while also recovering from the country’s economic recession. Despite practicing preventive measures, wearing face masks and face shields outside, still it is not enough to stop the pandemic. Even relying on the vaccines is just another band-aid solution, as it cannot really guarantee you immune from the virus. The government’s broken promise to return from the recession within the year just adds weight to the burden brought upon by the...

MY REFLECTION Based on the topic, I have learned that mini-survey may help me in:     I learned that conducting the mini-survey helped me to learn and understand more about the relationships of Filipinos, in a micro perspective. I was able to look at the similarities and differences of different Filipino relationships with in terms of family, community, school, and other agencies. For example, in conducting the survey, we can find out how the children in strict Filipino households interact with their parents as opposed to those children who grew up in an easygoing household. Conducting a mini-survey in an academic perspective, it can help us design the rest of our design paper, assess the feasibility of a project, get advice and reactions from beneficiaries, and evaluate projects. Conducting a mini-survey instead of a real survey is just as effective, but with only fifteen to thirty questions given to a small sample of twenty-five to seventy people, and which it only care...

WEEK 1 - Discussion 3

Discussion question 3 Answer the question in exactly 5 sentences only. Recall an instance where you engaged in a conversation with a topic that you are not comfortable with? What is the topic and how did you manage it?      There was a time where I had a conversation with my mother about body-shaming this certain celebrity. She was ranting about how they can just use their money to lose weight and stay "fit", and yet they choose not to take surgeries and whatnot. As a person who was also body-shamed for years, it was extremely uncomfortable for me since it felt like I was also being attacked, and that our physical "flaws" are still not accepted by society despite having a stable lifestyle and mental health. I was scared to confront her since I know that she still won't side with me, yet I remembered that it is still important to educate her about it. Although I was unable to defend my arguments with her, I knew that trying to be more open about topics like this ...

WEEK 1 - Discussion 2

Discussion question 2 Answer the question in exactly 5 sentences only. Give a specific problem that you encountered during a conversation and how did you address it?      Whenever I want to be get to know someone new, I always strike up small talk in order to keep the conversation going. However, I always feel nervous as I want the person to like me, which causes me to run out of things to say. There was this one time back in 8th grade where I wanted to be friends with a guy in my class since he seemed cool and that he seats next to me in class. At first, we were talking a lot, but then our conversation died down as I wasn't able to come up with a new topic and it became awkward. Despite my fear of being judged, I decided to become more confident and conquered that fear by talking to him again, and after that interaction, we became close friends.

WEEK 1 - Discussion 1

Discussion question 1 Answer the question in EXACTLY 5 sentences only. How do you usually start a conversation?      Starting a conversation usually depends on who, where, and why are we talking to that person. Thus, before engaging in a conversation, I always try to consider the environment and body language of the person I am going to talk to, so that I can avoid future communication breakdowns. I will also try to feel the atmosphere during the conversation, so that I can refrain from giving the wrong impression towards my peer. I always keep in mind that I should be cautious with my choice of words, as the person might not understand me during our conversion, such as using jargons and slang that they are not really aware of. These things will not only help me properly start a conversation, but also avoid miscommunications and insensitivity.

WEEK 8 - Discussion 3

Discussion 3 In your own words, differentiate LOCUTIONARY, ILLOCUTIONARY, PERLOCUTIONARY and give at least 1 example for each (not copied from the handout). Locutionary, Illocutionary, and Perlocutionary are the three types of speech act according to J.L Austin. These speech acts are statements used in order to deliver an intended language function, such as compliments, opinions, commands, etc. Locutionary is the act of making a meaningful utterance that is executed as a natural unit of speech. For a statement to be Locutionary, it must be sensible and have the same meaning to both the speaker and listener. An example of this is when someone says "Join our club!". It is locutionary because it creates an equal meaning between the speaker and the listener. Another type of speech act is the Illocutionary Act, which showcases the social function of the utterances told by the speaker. Not only does the speaker create sounds and words, but also implies several intentions to why the...

WEEK 8 - Discussion 2

Discussion question 2 Which of the types of speech context do you find easy and difficult to practice? What should you do to improve your skills? First, let us define the two types of speech context: the Intrapersonal and Interpersonal communication. Intrapersonal communication is when you become both the speaker and receiver as the communication occurs in your brain, it comes in your thoughts and feelings. On the other hand, Interpersonal communication takes place between two or more people, which can range from personal to formal conversations. For me personally, both types of communication are equally difficult and easy for me. However, if I were to really choose between the two, I would say that Intrapersonal is easier for me to practice because I can express myself and thought freely without having the fear of other people judging me. I also think that practicing to communicate with yourself first is crucial in engaging in interpersonal communication so that you know how to delive...

WEEK 8 - Discussion 1

Discussion question 1 As a senior high school student, what do you think is the advantage of having good communication skills in a variety of contexts? Do you think it will help you improve your personality? Why or Why not? As a senior high school student pursuing STEM, I can say that having good communication skills help me get through the challenges we face in conducting research for the school. These skills help me form connections with experts in order for us to conduct a good research paper. It also help me ease through our research defense and talking in front of crowds. With it, I am able to somehow reduce my fear of public speaking by also helping me in other subjects, like whenever we do reporting in class. For me, it is also an advantage to have good communication skills as I am nearing college. It willl help me socialize with bigger crowds, and improve my skills as a student, and help me get a job in the future.

WEEK 7 - Discussion 2

Discussion question 2 How can you improve your communication with your classmates, family members, teachers, etc. using verbal and non-verbal communication?  In order to improve our communication skills and become effective communicators towards people, we must learn how to listen attentively. Improving our listening skills is essential because it helps us understand messages and feedbacks from these people, and it also helps us to exercise appropriateness, the use of language that is applicable to the nature or context of the event. Next, I must learn how to use simple and precise words in delivering the message in order to directly express my thoughts and emotion clearly. Here, I must also remember to consider my audience, so that I can prevent myself from giving discriminatory remarks. Then, I should make the conversation as lively and vibrant in order to establish a connection with the audience in a positive manner, so that they can grasp the information easily. On nonverbal co...

WEEK 7 - Discussion 1

Discussion question 1 Differentiate VERBAL and NON-VERBAL communication Verbal communication is when the speaker uses words in order to convey their message. This type of communication is vital and effective because it makes it possible to spread the message faster while still being accurate. Thus, verbal communication helps you save valuable time. Examples of using verbal communication are conferences, presentations, gossips, and casual conversations. The first two examples are types of formal communication while the latter part are examples of informal communication. On the other hand, nonverbal communication refers to the use of body movements without requiring any spoken words to pass messages. In this type of communication, the speaker converys the message through hand gestures, body language, and facial expressions. Nonverbal communication is also important if the verbal communication is not enough to deliver the message across. When used hand-in-hand with verbal communication, i...
